Fatty Liver? Everybody has it…what’s the big deal…that’s literally the response I get quite often during my consultation sessions. In this article I’m going to tell what a Big Deal it really is.
Sadly, most people think the liver only flushes out booze…
If you are struggling to lose weight or have skin issues it could most likely be your liver. In fact studies show Fatty Liver and elevated liver enzymes increases your risk of Alzheimers and Parkinsons.
Did you know that your Liver is responsible for more than 500 vital functions in your body? The liver plays a role in nearly every organ system in the body.
Your liver is responsible for the production of bile which break down all the cheese and grease from your crispy deep-fried nuggets (basically all your fats) in the small intestine during digestion and then carries away waste to be disposed out through the large intestine/colon.
Your liver is responsible for the production of cholesterol (the good kind) and some very special proteins to help carry fats through the body.
When you need that extra boost of energy it’s your liver that comes to your rescue because it converts excess glucose into glycogen for storage and when you need it it converts the glycogen back to glucose.
Your liver stores iron which is used to process haemoglobin (when you pull down the lower lids of your eye…the paler the coloration the higher is the indication of anaemia).
Your liver plays a role even in sex hormone metabolism and produces carrier proteins that are important in reproduction and development.
Your liver converts the poisonous ammonia to urea – excreted in your urine.
Your liver clears bilirubin (excess of which makes you yellow).
And of course, your liver filters your blood off all your booze, drugs and other poisonous substances.
Your liver also regulates blood clotting, resists infections, removes harmful bacteria from the bloodstream…and I am almost breathless…listing just the chip of the iceberg of all the most important list of responsibilities of your liver.
When the liver has broken down harmful substances, its by-products are excreted into the bile or blood. Bile by-products enter the intestine and leave the body in the form of faces. Blood by-products are filtered out by the kidneys, and leave the body in the form of urine.
One of the vital functions of your liver is filtration…Your Liver is a lot like the candle in your water filter. Almost all the blood in your body flows through the liver. The liver filters your blood and stores the toxins in its fat cells. Your liver requires bile to get rid of toxins from the fat cells. Bile is yellow in colour and looks a lot like dishwashing liquid. In fact, it does the job of a dishwashing liquid as well, it clears greasy toxins from your liver. Most of us have very little bile compared to the toxic overload we dump into the body. The overworked Bile eventually becomes toxic too. While your liver continues to filter the blood, and your bile is too toxic to clear out the existing toxins from the fat cells in the liver, your liver runs out of storage space with the existing fat cells. Your liver in its divine intelligence, begins to create a new layer of fat cells and continues to store toxins. As this process is repeated you end up with a fatty liver…Grade 1, Grade 2 or Grade 3.
And as the liver begins to grow in size with layers of fat cells it can no longer perform those 500 vital functions…and soon becomes too big to handle itself. This is when parts of your liver begin to die…Cirrhosis (the scary word) – doesn’t just happen when you overindulge in alcohol…non-alcoholic fatty liver also leads to liver cirrhosis.
Fortunately, Fatty Liver can be reversed. Yay!
The first step would be to find out where you currently stand; a Liver Function Test (Blood test) followed by an Ultrasound of the whole abdomen will help your Doctor tell you how far up the liver destruction pathway you have ventured.
The next step would be to undergo thorough Liver Detox followed by a Gut cleanse. Remember your gut and your liver are connected. All the waste from your liver eventually flows into your gut. Even 2-3 sessions of a liver and gut cleanse would give you immense relief from a vast array of symptoms – skin issues, digestive issues, fatigue, weight gain and brain fog.
Is it safe? The Liver detox protocol that I practice at my Detox Centre is so safe that during my earlier practice years in Australia, I used to have pregnant women requesting a Liver Detox to prevent morning sickness.
The 3rd Step – Post a Liver Detox coupled with a Gut Cleanse it is always advisable to include a list of supplements as a part of your daily routine. Milk Thistle is a wonderful herb that can help heal even Liver Cirrhosis. Google can help you with the extensive research done on the benefits of this herb. Turmeric, Ginger, Garlic and even the humble Dandelion Root is great to give your liver a helping hand.
Remember your liver doesn’t get toxic only because of the food or alcohol. Your liver is also the seat of Anger and Anxiety. This is why a Physical Detox Program must always be followed through with a Mental and Emotional Detox.- The final step in your Liver Detox protocol.
